Why this matters for writers

Writing is the goal most damaged by outcome visualization, and the research says why: Pham and Taylor found that imagining the finished result can reduce the effort that produces it. A board of your book on a shelf is, mechanically, a way of getting some of the satisfaction without the writing. Build the other thing instead - yourself at the desk at the hour you actually write, in the ordinary conditions of an ordinary Tuesday, mid-draft and unglamorous. Writers are not short of ambition. They are short of a self-image in which sitting down is simply what happens at that time of day.

Practically: put the desk, the hour and the current draft on the board, and leave the published book off it entirely until the draft exists. Track sessions rather than words if word counts make you stall. The one thing imagery cannot do here is generate the pages, and the research suggests an over-vivid picture of the finished book will quietly reduce them.
